Frequently Asked Questions (The Beginning)
/New Year's Day we held a Live Music Night at our apartment in NYC. Everyone comes and plays music: amateurs, professionals, kids, grandparents, talented, still learning. It's a great time. It was kind of a farewell to our friends and community here. Since we knew folks had lots of questions, I created a slide show that ran on loop on a couple screens so people could get the low-down. I thought this might be a good way to kick off this blog. Here you go.
When are you leaving?
Emily and the kids go to my parents in Virginia on Jan. 12. Our boat will be ready Feb. 4, so Iβll stay here until then and keep working. Iβll be staying at the Mechamβs. Once the boat is ready, Iβll go to VA, weβll fly from there to St. Martin (in the Caribbean) and pick-up the boat.
Where are you going once youβre on the boat?
Weβre not completely sure. We start in St. Maartin. Weβll spend some time getting used to the boat, making sure the kids feel safe and confident. Once weβre ready, weβll probably sail to the Virgin Islands (British and U.S.). Then head north through Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, then weβll see from there, OR weβll do something completely different. Weβre not sure yet.
Do you know how to sail?
Yes. We're not experts, but weβve been sailing as a family for about six years.
Whatβs the boat like?
Itβs a 38β catamaran. Itβs got four cabins (bedrooms) and two heads (bathrooms). Itβs a sail boat, but it also has two engines, so it can motor around as well.
What made you want to do this?
Life moves fast. Our kids will be leaving home soon. Weβve wanted to do a trip like this for a long time. Thatβs why we started sailing lessons over five years ago. This is our last year before our kids start leaving for college, missions, marriage, etc. All good things, but life will change. We want one last chance to be together as a family before we move into that next chapter.
When are you coming back?
Around August/September. If we hate it, weβll come back sooner. If we love itβand can afford itβwe may stay out longer.
Are you quitting your job?
Probably. Iβll notify them what weβre doing: going sailing for the spring/summer, and see what they say. If they want to grant some kind of a leave-of-absence or sabbatical, great. If not, Iβll give notice. Iβll be looking for work when we come back, so if you know of anything, keep me in the loop : )
How are you paying for this?
Savings. Like sailing lessons, weβve been working toward this for several years. Weβre cutting our costs to the bone: subletting our apartment, canceling extra cell phone lines, etc. Did I mention Iβll be looking for a job when I get back? : )
Are you buying the boat?
Yes. Weβre financing it, so weβve had to put a big chunk of money down, and weβre making payments on the rest as we go. Weβll either sell the boat when we get back, or keep it. Weβll see. So, when I get backβ¦job. You know what to do.
Have you ever done anything like this before?
Nope. Weβre pretty excited and a little terrified. Itβs been a lot of learning and work to get to this point. Weβve done our best to prepare: tons of research, reading blogs, talking to people who are out there doing what we want to do. We wouldnβt be where we are without the generous help of many others.
Whatβs the longest youβve been on a boat?
At one time: a week. Weβve chartered boats in the Virgin Islands (with adult friends), Florida Keys (with the kids), and sailed from Annapolis to Maine (delivering a friendβs boat). We know how to live on a boat: cooking, sleeping, using the bathroom, sailing, swimming, etc. But this will be a whole new experience.
How will you do your laundry?
In a bucket.
Will you have internet connection?
Sometimes. Mostly when weβre at anchor. Weβll either go ashore with a laptop, or see if we can pick it up with a booster antennae from our boat.
Can we follow what youβre doing?
Yes. www.fezywig.com We plan to blog and vlog and splog and crog. Just kidding. Mostly just blog and vlog. I donβt even know what those others mean. I just made them up.
What does Fezywig mean?
Good question. It comes from the Dickens character βFezziwigβ. He was Scroogeβs first boss in
A Christmas Carol. He and his wife knew how to work hard and play hard. They threw wonderful parties with plenty of food, fiddling and dancing, to which βeveryone in the houseβ was invited.
What about Lily?
[Our youngest daughter, Lily, has Down Syndrome]
Lily loves the ocean. Her middle name is βOceanβ, literally. (Iβm not making that up.) She loves the wind. All the kids will have harnesses and tethers anytime weβre off-shore sailing. Our main goal: nobody drowns. We hope all our kids will become better sailors, swimmers and souls.
Whoβs idea was this?
Erikβs mostly. But itβs definitely been a collaboration. Everyone is βon boardβ (yes, a pun). We love the simplicity of sailing, being close as a family and taking a break from the noise of the world. Erik & Emily are both turning 40 in 2014. Weβre considering this an βintermissionβ. Weβll stretch our legs, get a drink, use the proverbial menβs/ladies room, look each other in the eye as much as we can, and then dive back in for Act II.
Isnβt this risky?
Yes. Itβs emotionally risky. Itβs financially risky. Itβs professionally risky. Itβs all kinds of risky. As Iβve told several people (ergo: Frequently asked questions), this is not coming at a financially convenient time. We did not just receive a windfall of cash, I did not sell a business, we did not receive an inheritance, weβre not banking on earning money while weβre on the boat. But we feel like this is the right time and the right season in our lives to go. We donβt think it will kill us. Weβll figure the rest out as we go. In fact, Iβve started to think about the risk of not going. Thatβs the risk we often forget.
Whatβs the risk of just continuing to do what weβre doing? I could stay at the same job. We could keep living in the same apartment, driving the same car, living a great life. Because we have a great life. Weβre so happy. We actually donβt think we could be any happier. We just believe this earth God gave us is beautiful and we want to see more of it. We want to meet more people on it. And we want to do that as a family. We donβt expect to come back happier, per se. But we do hope to come back with our minds and hearts expanded, to love, appreciate and understand people and the places we live more deeply.
Thatβs probably a good wrapping up point. Once you get that philosophical, thereβs really nowhere else to go. So if you still have other questions, let us know. Weβre more than happy to talk about ourselves. We love you! Weβll miss you! Weβll look forward to seeing you again soon. Happy 2014.
